The Lero Summit in September was a real highlight of the year so far, bringing Lero researchers together and showcasing some of the exciting work taking place around the country.

As well as publishing important research, this quarter we also announced new industry partnerships, including with Arm and Qualcomm and I congratulate our recent award winners, Ita, Nicola and Martin.

Our commitment to world-leading research remains unwavering as we continue to focus on our projects and goals this year and for the years ahead.

EV drivers more likely to be at fault in crashes 

Finbarr Murphy, Kevin McDonnell and Barry Sheehan of UL and Lero.

Drivers of electric vehicles (EVs) are more likely to be involved in at-fault road traffic accidents than drivers of petrol and diesel cars, a study by researchers at Lero and University of Limerick reveals.

Lero announces Qualcomm partnership

Lero and Qualcomm Technologies have begun a new initiative focusing on enhancing performance by using highly advanced technology for artificial intelligence. 

The initiative is led by Lero Funded Investigator, Professor Patrick Denny.

Women blasé using social media fitness forums

Women sharing health and fitness content on social media are generally unconcerned about data privacy and are unaware personal information may be monetised without consent, researchers at Lero have found.

A Lero research team from University College Cork (UCC), deploying a systematic method for reviewing published research, selected 21 relevant academic papers from thousands of international researchers to clarify the benefits and challenges facing women interacting with fitness content on social media. ADAS now mandatory in line with Lero research

EU regulation aimed at significantly reducing deaths and serious injuries on roads by mandating certain Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in new vehicles has come into effect. This follows a study by Lero researchers at UL which found that installing ADAS on cars could result in a significant reduction in crashes. Read more.

Lero’s Professor Ita Richardson (University of Limerick) was among the winners at the 16th Annual Women Mean Business Conference & Awards in Dublin. The event recognises the achievements of businesswomen, academics and female entrepreneurs across Ireland. Read more.

Lero and Arm partner to build prototype car cameras for enhanced road safety

A four-year collaboration between Lero and Arm, the ARMADAS1 project is focused on the development of next-generation car camera systems. The project will explore the optimisation of artificial intelligence to enhance how vehicles perceive their surroundings. The research project, valued at €566,000, is designed to explore new technologies that will enable cars to see and react to their surroundings faster, more intelligently and more effectively. Two Lero Members win International Business Awards® 2024

Nicola Corless, Communications and Marketing Manager at Lero, was named the winner of a Silver Stevie® Award in the Communications Professional of the Year category while Professor Martin Glavin, Lero Funded Investigator, was awarded a Bronze Stevie® in the Thought Leader of The Year - Government or Non-Profit category the 21st annual International Business Awards®.

Lero hosts 26th Irish Machine Vision and Image Processing (IMVIP) Conference

Lero and D²iCE hosted the 2024 IMVIP Conference at University of Limerick. 

IMVIP 2024 included a keynote from Lero Director, Prof. Lionel Briand, and Lero Alumna, Dr Abeba Birhane. Lero researcher, Dr Brian Deegan held a tutorial at the conference on ‘How Image Quality Affects Deep Learning and Computer Vision’.

    Lero mourns the passing of former Principal Investigator, University of Limerick Professor (Emeritus) Liam Bannon. Liam was not only a brilliant researcher but also a supportive and kind colleague and friend to many of us.

    Dementia research song

    Lero PhD on song

    Lero Alumna, Dr Lisa Kelly, led the project of creating an original song that explores the experience of living with dementia, and the importance of public and patient involvement in dementia research.

    The project was supervised by Prof. Ita Richardson, Lero Deputy Director, and Prof. Hillary Moss, Course Director of the MA in Music Therapy.
